Removing Packaging, Cutting Waste

For many products, packaging provides a protective layer. It reduces damage and prevents products from being tampered with. However, many products can be sold with less or no packaging. To cut costs and respond to buyer preferences, many brands are removing packaging. Hobbycraft is one of them.

Get Rid of Excessive Packaging

There is a general desire to get rid of excessive packaging. We don’t need to wrap everything in plastic or put tubes of toothpaste into a cardboard box. These layers of packaging are doing little to protect the product. What’s more, they add to production costs.

With a focus on sustainability, many brands are ditching excessive packaging and in some cases are selling goods with no packaging at all.

Half of the Easter product range offered by Hobbycraft was sold without packaging. In addition, a further 300 items used plastic-free packaging. This was a step towards the company’s sustainability commitments which have so far seen:

  • The complete removal of styrofoam as a packaging material
  • 20% of products sold without packaging – aiming for 25% by the end of 2024
  • Plastic-free packaging on 43% of the product range

Packaging Advice for Small Businesses
