Sweets in Sustainable Packaging

A large tub of chocolate sweets is a festive must-have in many households. Now, a few brands have made it easier to stick with these traditions and have a greener Christmas. Sweets in sustainable packaging may sound like a modern development. However, for Quality Street producer, Nestle, it’s a case of going back to their roots.

Back to Paper Sweet Wrappers

Back in 1936, the first boxes of Quality Street contained treats in paper wrappings. Over time, these were switched for shiny foil wrappers and some were double-wrapped with plastic. There’s no doubt that these gave a jewel-like appearance, however, it wasn’t a sustainable choice.

In 2022, Quality Street removed the plastic and went back to paper or foil wrappers. Both can be scrunched up and disposed of in the recycling bin.

This Christmas, they have gone a step further. You can still purchase Quality Street in plastic tubs, however, a new cardboard tub version is now available in Tesco. It is hoped that this 100% recyclable option will be a big hit with environmentally conscious consumers.
