Cardboard Office is a Green Apple Winner
It is widely agreed that radical changes in resource management, business processes, product design and packaging are required to tackle environmental issues. Change is happening because many companies see the financial, social and eco-benefits of energy efficiency and waste reduction measures.
We have recently read about Cawleys, an established waste management company. This family business has taken a commitment to sustainability to another level. Cawleys is committed to the reduce, recycle and reuse philosophy, as demonstrated in their Coffee Cup and Vegware recycling schemes.
The company runs a fuel-efficient fleet and is currently trialling electric collection trucks. What stood them apart for us was the fact that their Luton Head Office is filled with recycled cardboard furniture. The cardboard desks and shelving are sufficiently robust for everyday use, yet they can be easily dismantled and recycled when they are no longer required.
Green Apple Award Winners 2021
Cawleys was one company recently recognised and rewarded in the Green Apple Awards. This annual ceremony recognises environmental best practice in the UK, with global companies receiving Green World Awards. The other Green Apple Award winners include:
- Green Motion Car and Van Rental Business
- Marstons Brewery and Pub Owners
- Gavin Jones Landscaping and Ground Maintenance
- Keltbray Engineering
- Bedfordshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
These and other winners have significantly reduced their carbon footprint and made cost savings without compromising services.
The winning companies will share their actions in The Green Book. This has been in publication since the first winners were announced in 1994. Free to download, it includes practical examples and guidance to support moves towards an environmentally sustainable business model. It is a valuable resource for any company looking to reduce its carbon footprint.
Continuous Improvement on Sustainability
Aylesbury Box Company is committed to continuous improvements and we are further inspired by reading about the achievements of these businesses. Our major achievement of 2021 has been achieving FSC® certification.
We have always sourced paper-based materials from responsibly managed forests and have promoted the green credentials of cardboard packaging. This achievement also reflects our focus on sustainable internal processes. We are focused on minimising waste and maximising efficiency; a model which benefits our business, as well as the environment.
We have been surprised by the increase in interest in sustainable packaging through 2021. More of our prospects are considering this as critical to their decisions on packaging design and supplier. They want to help customers make ethical choices and they need to know that their green credentials can be traced back through the supply chain.
Packaging is often the first point of contact between a customer and a brand, so it has to deliver what consumers are looking for. For an increasing number of shoppers, recyclable packaging is a consideration when selecting goods. Shoppers are switching to alternative products or brands simply because of the packaging.
