Biggest Single Use Plastic Packaging Removal

Consumer pressure and Plastic Tax are driving changes in packaging design. These influencing factors are driving supermarkets to fully embrace efforts to reduce the use of single use plastic. As a result, we’ve seen changes to many own-brand products, with viable paper or cardboard alternatives taking the place of plastic wrappers.

To give a few examples, Tesco’s tissue packs and multipacks are now wrapped in paper. In Morrisons, changes to teabags and meat trays are among many switches to cut plastic use. And, if you buy a duvet or pillow from Asda, it is sold in a paper wrap.

The latest move by Sainsbury’s is replacing plastic mushroom punnets with cardboard punnets. The shop sells 17 different types of mushrooms and it is estimated that this one change will reduce plastic use by 775 tonnes a year. The retailer says this is the biggest single use plastic removal project they have completed.

We look forward to seeing many more products with less packaging, along with switches to sustainable cardboard boxes and paper packaging through 2024.
