All Aboard! Cardboard Boats
If a delivery box has ever been left on your doorstep in the rain, you’ll know that water can transform corrugated cardboard from strong and rigid to soft and weak. Therefore, it takes great design to build cardboard boats that stay afloat. However, schools, businesses and community groups across Bristol are doing just that.
Cardboard Boats Race in the Harbour
As part of the Bristol Harbour Festival on 14-16 July, more than 100 teams are expected to launch model cardboard boats in this unusual race. All are based on the design of the Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter. The organisers have run cardboard engineering workshops in advance of the event, to help teams to construct vessels from cardboard. The 2022 winners were Ashton Gate Primary School.
In addition, some courageous teams will build larger cardboard creations to set sail in. In this cardboard boat race, teams must use manpower to navigate their vessels along the harbour course.
Moisture Resistant Cardboard Boxes
Don’t tell the teams, as we want it to be a fair race, but there are ways to make cardboard moisture resistant. A thin application of a natural or plastic coating acts as a water barrier. These barrier applications make all the difference to companies that need to ship items where moisture could affect the effectiveness of the cardboard packaging.
