I Can’t Open the Packaging!

Packaging plays a vital role in protecting and presenting products, yet sometimes boxes, jars, tins and wrappers are a challenge to open. The Design Age Institute, part of the Royal College of Arts is petitioning for things to change.

Inclusive Packaging Design Standard

A survey conducted by the Design Age Institute found that 60% of 55-104-year-olds regularly found it difficult to open packaging. Ring pulls on cans, unscrewing lids on jars and peel-back labels were among the packaging challenges. Difficulty with opening packaging causes frustration, puts consumers off buying certain products and encourages the use of potentially hazardous sharp implements to get to the contents.

The Institute is keen for the Government to introduce a design standard for packaging that promotes inclusivity. It believes that some minor adaptions could have a significant impact on accessibility.

Before the petition can be presented to Parliament, it needs more signatures. If you are in support of inclusive packaging and would like to see frustration-free packaging options on the shelves, you can find out more and add your signature.
