Clam-ping Down on Bakery Packaging

In pursuit of reducing plastic packaging, all the major supermarkets are rethinking retail packaging. The latest to hit the headlines is Sainsbury’s. If you are a fan of a continental breakfast, you’ll be aware that croissants, pastries and other bakery items are often sold in clamshell plastic containers. However, to reduce packaging waste, this has changed. Some products, including doughnuts, will now be sold in cardboard containers. Others will be in paper bags, like the loose bakery items.

This move is part of Sainsbury’s strategy to halve plastic packaging by 2025. It follows action to remove plastic packaging from several own-brand products including lightbulbs, toilet paper and mushrooms. Every one of these steps prevents the need for thousands of tonnes of plastic every year.
