A Squeeze on Toothpaste Packaging
We’re usually promoting the use of cardboard packaging, but not in this article!
As part of the long-term strategy to reduce packaging waste, Tesco is on a mission to remove any unnecessary packaging. Last year, they removed the cardboard boxes from their own brand of toothpaste. This move reportedly saved 55 tonnes of packaging, without any negative impact on the product.
The supermarket brand is not working with leading toothpaste suppliers to trial the wider removal of boxes from toothpaste. Initially, a 30-store trial will be run. If successful, the scheme could be extended across the country, potentially saving hundreds of tonnes of unnecessary packaging material.
No Boxes for Tomato Puree
Tesco has previously followed a similar path, removing the boxes from tomato puree. The action means more tubes can be packaged and shipped in each lorry, whilst manufacturing costs are lowered.
Wouldn’t it be great to have a plastic-free alternative to toothpaste tubes, such as the aluminium tubes used for tomato puree? We don’t know if that’s a possibility for the future, but for now, we are fully behind campaigns to remove unnecessary packaging – even if it is cardboard boxes.
