Avoid Plastic Tax with Cardboard Packaging

Samsung is one of the latest businesses to announce initiatives to move towards zero waste to landfill and plastic-free packaging. Expect to see many more following this strategy in the coming months. This is in part due to the UK Government’s Plastic Tax coming into force in April 2022.

Shift Towards Sustainable Packaging

Many companies have been making the shift towards sustainable materials, processes and design in recent years. Refill options are becoming more widely available and excessive packaging is now a PR disaster. The added incentive of tax avoidance will spur more brands into action.

From April, predominantly plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled material will be taxed at £200 per tonne. This charge aims to encourage changes in behaviour and attitude relating to the reduction, reuse and recycling of packaging.

Why Corrugated Cardboard?

A growing number of brands are switching from plastics to cardboard packaging. Corrugated cardboard isn’t suitable for every product, but it can be more widely used. It is an incredibly robust and easy to print material with insulating properties.

According to a Two Sides Report, the collection and UK recycling rates for cardboard and paper-based packaging are higher than any other packaging material (85%). The report also states that public perception of it as an environmentally responsible packaging material is also high. Consumers know that it can be collected and recycled.

By opting for bespoke boxes, designed to provide the best fit and protection for products, unnecessary layers and fillers can be eliminated. This is beneficial for the environment, as well as reducing packaging, packing and shipping costs.

If your company are using plastic, get in touch with your local cardboard packaging supplier. Their advice could help you avoid plastic tax bills.
