Traffic Light System for Packaging Waste
To mark the start of 2025, a new traffic light system has been introduced. Known as Recycling Assessment Methodology (RAM), this applies to large-scale packaging producers. The aim is to encourage a shift to widely recycled materials and increase the percentage of packaging that is recycled.
Improving Packaging Waste Management
As part of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), common packaging materials have been graded green, amber or red. The colour reflects how easy it is to collect and recycle the packaging waste in the current UK recycling infrastructure. Where a packaging producer uses a majority of ‘green’ materials, which includes paper, cardboard and aluminium, they will pay lower fees. However, ‘red’ packaging materials will incur higher charges.
Producers are expected to consult with their supply chain and compliance specialists to gather sufficient information for accurate data reporting. These regulations are viewed as a vital step in reducing the environmental burden of packaging waste and increasing effective resource management. What’s more, DEFRA will channel EPR fees into developing the national recycling network.
