Recyclable v Reusable Food Packaging

Is it more environmentally friendly for cafes and takeaways to provide food in paper-based takeaway boxes or on reusable alternatives?

Refillable Packaging

Refilling packaging is one way to cut the cost of production and the volume of waste. We’re seeing more refill shops and refill stations, so could the idea work for food delivery? The case for reusable food containers is strong. They can be returned after use, cleaned and reused; it certainly sounds like an economical and environmental packaging option.

Recyclable Paper-based Packaging

Well, the results are in! Research undertaken by The European Paper Packaging Alliance reveals that recyclable paper-based containers have a lower carbon footprint than refillable alternatives. However, both are preferable to plastic or polystyrene containers that have been widely used.

Although paper-based food boxes are disposed of after one use, the majority are collected and recycled into new boxes. This process proved to use considerably less water and resources compared to refillable alternatives. It also generated fewer CO2 emissions.
