Lowering the Carbon Footprint of Packaging

Amazon dominates the world of online retail and in the past, the company has been pulled up for poor packaging decisions. Many customers have received small items in huge boxes and there have also been concerns about the volume of void fill used in deliveries.

Reduce Excessive Packaging

The company has been working to address these issues. The company’s latest Sustainability Report* highlights some of the successes. As an example, the 41% drop in per-shipment packaging weight from 2015 to 2022 is evidence that action has been taken to reduce excessive packaging.

Amazon has also committed to stop using plastic padded bags for deliveries, favouring eco-friendly packaging materials and durable solutions that can be reused multiple times.

The company is working towards Net Zero and recognises that changes to packaging are one way to lower its carbon footprint. The scale of their operation means that every action to reduce, reuse and recycle has a considerable impact.

The report also suggests Amazon will provide more information to suppliers and customers to encourage them to opt for sustainable packaging solutions.
