Corrugated Cardboard for Flourishing Flower Beds

We’re used to supplying cardboard for flower boxes and plug plants, but could this corrugated cardboard prove to be a useful resource for gardening?

Corrugated Cardboard for Garden Weed Control

A recent article in Home & Garden* hails corrugated cardboard as an ideal material for suppressing weeds. It states that this common and widely available packaging material is sufficiently thick to smother undesirable plants without the need for chemicals.

The flattened cardboard can be positioned, with holes cut in to ensure it fits around established plants in the flower bed. Weighted down with rocks or stones, it can then be covered in topsoil, maintaining the desirable garden aesthetic.

Unlike many other weed barriers, corrugated cardboard is made from natural paper pulp, which is biodegradable. It will break down and disintegrate into the soil over time. This causes no negative environmental impact and replacement cardboard weed barrier can be laid as and when required.

Recycle Use Cardboard Boxes

If you are not using used cardboard boxes to try out this gardening technique, still flatten them. Then place them in your recycling bin, ready for collection. Old cardboard boxes are recycled using a heated process, ready to be made into more packaging.
