Cardboard Saves the Day!
Corrugated cardboard is a low-cost and widely available packaging material. With all the deliveries that are shipped in cardboard boxes, it is usually easy to get your hands on some if you need it.
Recreated Furniture Collection in Cardboard
This was the case for the quick-thinking team at Zaventem Ateliers. The Belgium designers had shipped 35 pieces of custom furniture for the Unique Design X in Mexico City. However, days before the exhibition was due to open, they learnt of issues at customs which would delay the arrival of their cargo.
Would the show open with a blank space where their creations should be? The team had other ideas. They gathered cardboard from around the city and set to work recreating their furniture collection. Each piece was replicated to scale and laid out as the team had envisaged.
This is such a testament to the attitude and creativity of the designers. It also showcases the versatility of corrugated cardboard, which was cut, shaped and even woven to evoke the furniture design concepts.
It seems that the last-minute switch to cardboard has provided great publicity for the team and may have increased visitor engagement at the exhibition.
