Cardboard Building in Newcastle
The Novum Summer Festival in Newcastle on Tyne was a force for creativity. Through the weekend of 11-13th August, the city hosted a range of community-orientated art, music and drama performances. One of the activities was the construction of a large cardboard building, which was designed by installation artist Oliver Grossetête.
The Possibilities are Endless with Cardboard Building
Hundreds of volunteers from the community contributed to the piece, which was made using just corrugated cardboard boxes and brown tape. As the material is lightweight, it could be moved and raised without the need for machinery; just people power!
The result was a 14-meter-high building, standing outside the Civic Centre. The curved roof structure gave an impressive profile to this cardboard building. The project focused on bringing people together to create and at the end of the festival, the community also got involved in toppling the huge installation.
Although temporary, the materials used for this cardboard building were all collected for recycling. They can be reprocessed into new boxes; maybe to be used on a future cardboard construction.
