Research & Development Sample Kit Boxes

The Oxford Foundry All-Innovate 2020 Winner was Neurolytic Healthcare, a precision medicine company. As part of their research and development process, they needed boxes to send sample collection kits and information to study participants. As a relatively local organisation, they visited Aylesbury Box Company to discuss their packaging requirements.

What is Neurolytic Healthcare?

Neurolytic Healthcare is a team of Oxford University PhD graduates who are building a platform to improve the diagnosis and treatment of migraines.

According to data shared on The Migraine Trust website, 1 in 7 people suffer from this debilitating neurological condition. Triggers and symptoms vary, but a migraine can cause blurred vision, heightened sensitivity to sound and light, and nausea. For migraine sufferers, this can impact their careers, relationships, mental health and quality of life.

When migraine sufferers visit their GP, it is difficult to identify the necessary biological, behavioural and environmental factors that are specific to that patient. The response is a trial-and-error process, where drugs are prescribed to see if they help, without causing side effects. It can take years to discover an effective treatment.

Neurolytic Healthcare is developing a tailored migraine solution. This draws on genetics and data from thousands of migraine sufferers to provide remote medical diagnosis and pharmacogenetic testing so the correct treatment can be prescribed. A migraine prediction app will accompany their offer, as early action can reduce the impact.

Remote medical diagnosis and treatment have become the norm over lockdown. Providing preventative and relief management solutions that can be accessed at home is an efficient solution for both patients and healthcare providers.

Quality Packaging at Speed

Collecting saliva samples from study participants is an important stage in the research and development of this project. The team had a box of a similar dimension and style to the packaging they required.

They had a basic budget and wanted printed boxes that could be shipped out and returned without damage to the contents. We developed robust, postal boxes with an adhesive strip. This enables the recipient to fill, seal and return the boxes.

The other requirement was for a quick turnaround. Their first order was for 500 printed boxes, but a good response from willing participants meant that this was soon doubled. These orders came in at the start of lockdown.

“Adam at Aylesbury Box pulled out all the stops to fulfil this order, despite a socially distanced manufacturing team and declining cardboard supplies. He liaised with alternative cardboard suppliers and even some competitors to get our order manufactured, printed and delivered in a short space of time. He maintained good communication throughout, keeping me up to speed with progress. The boxes were exactly what we were looking for.”
